Mathematics/Applied Mathematics Area

This area program is designed for those wishing to use their mathematical knowledge in an applied setting - industry - which may range over many fields (engineering, finance, statistics, to name just a few). The program is very flexible, as courses related to the application of mathematics may be chosen from a wide variety of disciplines, including mathematics or statistics.

  • MAT 335 Matrix Theory and Linear Algebra
  • MAT 338 Ordinary Differential Equations
  • MAT 442 Introduction to Numerical Analysis
  • STA 253 Introduction to StatisticaI Data Analysis
  • STA 440 Mathematical Statistics I

Required Limited Electives: 27 hrs

  • At least 9 credits from MAT or STA 400-599
  • At least 18 credits from the following types of courses: 5 or 6 courses related to the application of mathematics. Must total at least 18 credits and be approved by the advisory committee. The program is very flexible. For example, an emphasis in either biology, chemistry, computer science, earth and environmental science, engineering physics, statistics and finance, or actuarial science is possible.

Co-requirements: 6 hrs
At least 6 credits from the following types of courses: two courses in computer programming selected from a list approved by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
